Synopsis
On Halloween night, 1906, young working class Lotta Rae is attacked by a wealthy gentleman.
She seeks justice at an Old Bailey trial alongside her barrister, William Linden, who she believes to be her ally.
The verdict is devastating and Lotta Rae soon realises the guardians of justice do not support her.
But what none could foresee were the shocking consequences.

My Review
Iām going to geek out a little over this one so you will have to bear with me!
Itās no secret that I love a historical read so when I saw The Trial Of Lotta Rae not only was I drawn in by its beautiful cover but also the synopsis just blew me away, I knew I would love it and I did.
Told over two narratives, one of Lotta Rae herself and the other of William, her lawyer assigned to represent her in court.
Before William got this case he wasnāt having much luck and was on the verge of losing his job so such a high profile case he welcomed with open arms. Poor Lotta is only young, in the throes of a whirlwind romance with Bertie with prospects of marriage on the horizon when a rich gentleman takes advantage of her at the company on Halloween night assaulting and raping her and then leaving her to return to the party.
The story opens with William and Lotta sharing a carriage back to court, you instantly get the sense that they do not want to be in each otherās company deposited when we are taken back to the days after the rape when the pair get along.
I really liked Lottaās character, even though she is very innocent much like many young girls in the early 1900s she has a strong determination to get justice for herself even though she is standing in a courtroom full of wealthy men and the prosecution at every angle point out how he is a respected man of the community and she is just a low-class girl out to get revenge on her boyfriend for a disagreement they had.
Why I Loved It
The entire story is extremely atmospheric of the times, every detail written draws you into 1900s London and the author has paced her story so well that you truly feel the connection with Lotta and even William.
Ultimately this is a devastating lot tragic story about a young girl's struggle to get herself justice in a privileged and male-dominated world.
This is a five-star must-read for me, I highly recommend you add this to your shelves if you love historical feminist reads.
