You know who.

You don't know why.

The play date started well. The children happy in one room while their mothers relaxed and drank wine in another.

But then the stranger appeared at the window. And then he was inside the house. And then he grabbed the knife...

Alice only means to stop him. She doesn't mean to hit him so hard. She didn't mean to kill him.

The police conclude that she acted in self-defence, but wracked with guilt, Alice sets out to apologise to Linda, the mother of the young man she killed - only to find she is unable to come clean about who she really is. But as Alice learns more about Ezra and why he was at her house, she starts to wonder whether she really has the full picture about what happened that day...

My Review: 📖

What a gripping, addictive read! I absolutely loved this book. From the very first chapter, The Break In pulled me into its web of secrets, lies, and layered characters, and it never let go.

Katherine Faulkner has a brilliant way of creating tension and keeping the reader on edge without ever overdoing it. This isn’t just a thriller; it’s a slow-burning psychological puzzle that had me second-guessing everything.

One of the stand-out elements for me was the non-linear timeline. The story jumps between different characters and time frames, and it’s done so seamlessly. Each shift revealed just enough to keep me hooked, while deepening the mystery and reshaping my understanding of what was really going on. I loved how the back-and-forth perspective, trying to connect all the dots before the big reveals hit, and let me tell you, the twists delivered. Just when I thought I had figured something out, Faulkner flipped the narrative again.

The characters themselves were incredibly well-drawn. All flawed, relatable, and sometimes unsettling. As the story unfolded, I found my loyalties shifting more than once. I started off trusting certain people, only to have those instincts completely upended later. The book explores how perception changes over time and how the same event can look so different depending on who’s telling the story.

And the ending? So satisfying. It tied everything together in a way that felt clever without being overly neat or predictable. I closed the book feeling impressed and a little haunted, which to me is the perfect mark of a great read.
