Synopsis
On a struggling Texas plantation, six enslaved women slip from their sleeping quarters and gather in the woods under the cover of night. The Lucysāas they call the plantation owners, after Lucifer himselfāhave decided to turn around the farmās bleak financial prospects by making the women bear children.
They have hired a āstockmanā to impregnate them. But the women are determined to protect themselves.
Now, each of the six faces a choice. Nan, the doctoring woman, has brought a sack of cotton root clippings that can stave off children when chewed daily. If they all take part, the Lucys may give up and send the stockman away.
But a pregnancy for any of them will only encourage the Lucys further. And should their plan be discovered, the consequences will be severe.

This morning Iām sharing my bookish thoughts for a wonderfully written historical novel Night Wherever We Go.
Set on a Texas plantation in 1852, this story is told from the POV of six enslaved women and the lives each one lives under the rule of āThe Lucyāsā who are the plantation owners.
Individually, their lives are equally hard, heartbreaking and unfair but when a āstockmanā is brought in to impregnate them all so they can increase the plantation population these women take matters into their own hands in a bid to protect themselves.
None want to bring babies into a world subservient to their master and live a life in which they could be sold or bartered for at any moment, so they chew cotton root clippings daily to keep the seed that is forced upon them from taking root. But when The Lucyās finds out, the women who are loosely stuck together are forced into an even more precarious position and not turning on each other is harder than they thought.
I loved this story. Throughout I was held right within this harrowing and heartbreaking era, my anger towards how they were treated heightened by the brilliant way in which the author writes, pulling in on every unflinching detail of a time in history that truly let humanity down.
The women all equally jumped out of the page at me, each oneās story as harrowing as the last. The love and sisterhood that resounds between the six women is profound and I feel must truly depict how women clung to each other in the darkest of times.
As much as I kept page-turning constantly throughout, I do feel it ended a little abruptly for my liking. I liked the way it jumped forward in time to give the reader a snapshot of the future, but at the same time, it felt a little rushed.
If you enjoy reading this genre of book, like I do, then I recommend you add this to your TBR. Itās a wonderfully written piece of historical fiction that is every bit as thought-provoking and emotional as you would expect.
