Synopsis..
History doesn't repeat itself. Does it?
A distressed teenage girl is found on the outskirts of Oxford.
The story she tells is terrifying: grabbed off the street, a plastic bag forced over her head, then driven somewhere remote and subjected to an assault.
DI Adam Fawley is doing the best he can to investigate, but the teenager refuses to press charges.
All he can do is try to ignore the sickening feeling he's seen something like this before...
But when another girl goes missing, Fawley knows his time is running out.
Because if he ignores the past any longer, this girl may not be coming back.
My Review...
Thank you Penguin for this great crime read. I Love a good detective story and this one had me hooked from the very first page.
Faith has survived being dragged off the street, thrown in the back of a van and attacked, she is found by a taxi driver limping on the side of the road trying to get home, covered in mud, clothes torn and crying.
But she does not want to report it to the police and everyone in her house is denying anything happened.
This is a fantastic crime plot and whilst I have not read any other Cara Hunter books ( this one is the 4th DI Fawley novel ) I will definitely be grabbing the others I have on my shelf as soon as I am able.
The story has snippets throughout of social media, news reports etc and is told from multiple points of views so that every other chapter you are reading somebody else's perspective, which I love, from the detectives right down to the victims and also the witnesses and possible suspects to. Also all the interviews are typed out in the way it would be in real life, I loved that little difference.
Everyone in the station works well together apart from a bit of rivalry between two male officers, Quinn and Asante.
You get an insight into Adam Fawleys background in this story and you get to understand a little why he thinks and acts the way he does. I don't have anything to compare it to previous books of what you find out about Adams life so I will look forward to finding out more.
Adam is desperate not to jinx his wife's pregnancy and goes to great lengths to keep it a secret from the police station after the death of there little boy in the past.
As much as I loved this plot, I did find it quite disturbing and emotionally pulling at times, the thought of one of my children getting grabbed off the street and pulled into a van is any parents worst nightmare and there was more then one occasion where I dreaded turning the page.
After Ds Somer manages to get Faith to tell them what happened Fawley starts to see similarities in this case that are alike to another fifteen years ago, a roadside rapist that Fawley helped put away who always strongly denied that he was innocent.
This was a fast paced story that every time I thought I had got somewhere, I was thrown another curve ball.
I loved all the characters in this book and thought that they are all fantastic in their own way, completely believable I would not be surprised if this series did not make its way on to the tv screens soon.
If you like a fast paced crime read that will equally keep you on the edge of your seat and shock you with its twists then this is the one for you.
