Thank you so much Hodder & Stoughton and Julie Clark for gifting me this extremely clever and twisty advanced copy.
Synopsis
Claire and Eva lead very different lives, but they have one thing in common - they are both in huge danger and need to disappear.
A chance encounter at the airport presents the two women with a simple but crazy solution: switch places then drop off the grid when they land.
But one woman will never reach her destination.
My Review
The story is told over two narratives, Claire, the wife of a wealthy big shot politician who is attempting a run for senate, and Eva, a college drop out who has fell in with the wrong people and is now making and selling drugs in her basement.
Both have there demons that they wish to escape from. Claire's is in the shape of her bullying abusive husband and Eva wants to make a life for herself away from the clutches of the men she has to make the drugs for.
The entire story is centred around a plane crash over the Atlantic Ocean.
Claire has been carefully planning her escape from her husband for months, she is due to go abroad alone and host a meeting on behalf of his company, this was her chance to disappear for good, she was supposed to be on the flight, but upon hearing that her plans have changed and her husband will now be at the destination she was meant to flee to she panics and at the last minute she trades tickets with a woman in the airport, desperate to do anything to escape the abusive life she is trapped in. Eva has been told to lay low as the police were sniffing around after a close call with a drug sell and under cover agents, she is meant to be going on a holiday but little do they know that she will not be returning, she too has saved and planned for a life elsewhere.
The story alternates between Claire's story after the plane crash and Eva's story in the months leading up to the crash. This back and forth timeline reading really amps up the drama and keeps you utterly gripped all the way through
Not actually knowing the outcome of the crash, who was and wasn't on it until the very end built up a lot of anticipation whilst reading.
Claire and Eva both had a hard life but for completely different reasons but both had the perfect reason to want anonymously set up elsewhere.
Why I Loved it
I literally tore though this one within a couple of days, apprehensive and fretful to figure out what really happened on the day of the crash, who was actually on it and why. I loved how I had no clue as to the actual outcome of the flight until the very end, up until that point it was all speculation.
I love a book that is told over more than one perspective and this one slowly allowed you to get to know the characters lives gradually the more you read.
It's fair to say this is most definitely a gripping read that will not allow you to put it down until you have read every page.
