Synopsis

Every mermaid and merman has a chance of becoming temporarily human, before ultimately choosing between the deep waters and the land up above.

Narya, a young mermaid, surfaces in hopes of finding out where she truly belongs. On her first night as a human, she accidentally stumbles across Nick and Louise, two marine biology students in the Bahamas. Mistaking them for her support group that consisted of past merpeople who chose to remain human, she manages to keep her identity secret after discovering her error in time.

Nick, who has an immeasurable passion for all things underwater, shies away from the ocean ever since a tragic incident a few years ago. When Narya appears, a deep sense of nostalgia and inexplicable familiarity gnaws away at him, rendering him a helpless prey to her charms. As unconventional friendships begin to flourish, a spark of romance between Narya and Nick also puts the mermaid in a dilemma.

She is treading dangerously close to the edge of the water as she accompanies her new friends on sea expeditions and raising suspicions amidst marine experts in the area.

Is she willing to risk everything she held dear underwater for a human?

Is love enough for a mermaid to survive on dry land?

My Review

I absolutely loved this story. Its no secret that I love a good fantasy read and when I had the opportunity to read a mermaid story not unlike The Little Mermaid I just had to accept.

Firstly the cover of the book is just beautiful, it drew me in straight away.

This is a lighthearted read that also touches on slightly deeper issues around love, loss and friendships.

Narya is a mermaid who longs to see what the Human world is truly like. In the Mer world at some point in your life you are offered nine chances to visit the Human world and come back. Many have gone before Narya and have came back, also there are those that have gone and decided they liked it so much they will stay, many of these act as guardians to those who wish to temporarily come to the surface and visit.

Narya is one of those who decide to give it a try and when she emerges, her tail disappears and turns to legs and her throat is parched dry as she waits upon the sand for her guardians to arrive and take her somewhere safe where she can be shown the sights and learn human ways. Time passes and she starts to doubt she has the correct meeting point when she suddenly sees two people walking towards her. These turn out to be two passers who work at the local marine university nearby and not the Mer guides she was expecting but Narya doesn't actually find this out in the beginning and she goes along with believing them to be her guides and they take her with them as they assume she is drunk and needs looking after.

This is the beginning of her human experiences, of falling in love, making new friends.

This is an uplifting and light hearted take on the Disney classic and would be a perfect read for adults and YA alike.

Why I Loved It

I found myself totally captivated by this story, The Little Mermaid was one of my favourites as a child and to read an adults not so dissimilar version was extremely pleasing. I laughed at times and loved that fact that the main character had a special gift where she could communicate with sharks.

If your looking for a light hearted read that will make you smile and take you back to your childhood then this is the one for you.

Thank you L.L Kombe for gifting me this lovely read.
