Synopsis
It's a small story. A small town with small lives that you would never have heard about if none of this had happened.
Hinton Hollow. Population 5,120.
Little Henry Wallace was eight years old and one hundred miles from home before anyone talked to him. His mother placed him on a train with a label around his neck, asking for him to be kept safe for a week, kept away from Hinton Hollow.
Because something was coming.
Narrated by Evil itself, Hinton Hollow Death Trip recounts five days in the history of this small rural town, when darkness paid a visit and infected its residents. A visit that made them act in unnatural ways. Prodding at their insecurities. Nudging at their secrets and desires. Coaxing out the malevolence suppressed within them. Showing their true selves.
Making them cheat.
Making them steal.
Making them kill.
Detective Sergeant Pace had returned to his childhood home. To escape the things he had done in the city. To go back to something simple. But he was not alone.
Evil had a plan.
My Review
"Choice is free but seldom easy." - A Clockwork Orange, Anthony Burgess
This is a story predominately narrated by Evil itself.
Its main goal is to follow and corrupt Detective Pace from London to his home town Hinton Hollow and infect the minds of everyone who lives there for five whole days, leaving in its wake death, destruction and a town torn apart.
Hinton Hollow is a small town packed with friendly people. They leave their doors unlocked and allow their children to play out the front with no worries for their safety, this is how pleasant the town is and how rarely they get trouble.
But as much as Hinton Hollow is a small pleasant town, there is always something lurking just under the surface with people that put on a smily face. These are the people that Evil searches for and it touches every single person that has some form of depravity or insecurity locked away inside of them. It sidles up against them, gives them a little nudge and watches the horror unfold with glee as a small bicker turns into something far more angry and dangerous.
Friends and family turn on one another and horrific things happen. Everyone is affected one way or another and when Evil finally leaves after five days he makes sure that the town is not the same as it was before.
Why I Loved It
I really enjoyed this read, it quite literally kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire story and was extremely compelling. For me I must admit I struggled with some of the more gory parts of the story, one part in particular I just could not read as these parts were just a bit to disturbing for me but aside from that the actual book itself was a great read.
If you love a gory horror story then thesis definitely one for you.
Not for the faint hearted though.
