Sometimes it is wise to remember there is a reason why our mothers told us not to talk to strangers...
Carrie's best friend has an accident and can no longer make the round-the-world trip they'd planned together, so Carrie decides to go it alone.
Violet is also travelling alone, after splitting up with her boyfriend in Thailand. She is also desperate for a ticket on the Trans-Siberian Express, but there is nothing available.
When the two women meet in a Beijing Hotel, Carrie makes the impulsive decision to invite Violet to take her best friend's place.
Thrown together in a strange country, and the cramped cabin of the train, the women soon form a bond. But as the journey continues, through Mongolia and into Russia, things start to unravel – because one of these women is not who she claims to be…
MY REVIEW... The thing I loved most about this story was the fact I was kept guessing pretty much all the way through who the un hinged friend really was!! Carrie is carefree and on her holiday alone due to her best friend, Laura accident breaking her leg the week before they were due to depart. She gets on with everybody and makes friends easily, the first to make conversation and ending up the life and soul of any group she sits with.
Violet is also travelling alone, after her boyfriend decides to stay on in Bangkok, living the party life with his new german friends he has made and the gorgeous bikini clad local women.
Feeling unwanted and in the way Violet goes on ahead with her planned backpacking trip. The two girls meet up, completly by chance at a ticket booth in a hotel next to the train station in Beijing, Carrie is attempting to get a refund on Lauras ticket, only to be told refunds are not allowed, but she can try and sell it on if she can find a buyer.
Violet, in the hopes of purchasing a ticket for the train but having fallen flat as they are all sold out over hears Carries conversation and decides to follow her to the bar to see if she can purchase the ticket from her.
It is in the bar, over nasty tasting beer that the girls get to know each other and eventually Carrie asks Violet if she would like to buy her friends ticket and travel together?
The girls form a friendship over the three day trip on the Trans Siberian Express and as they venture into Ulaanbaatar together they start to find out more about each other and an unhealthy bond is formed...
I loved how this was written and that I was kept guessing for so long! There is clearly something very wrong with Violet! mentally she does not seems altogeher and you are given little nuggets that she has had a disturbing past.
She starts to get an unhealthy obsession with Carrie, but every now and then Carrie will do something that will make you question just how nice she really is!
I think I was expecting more of a shocker at the end which is why this is a three star not four, for me but having said that I would still definitely recommend this one if you like a twisty thriller and the show Killing Eve!
