Synopsis
Some secrets can never be concealed....
Nell Galilee, her husband and 12-year-old step-daughter, Maude, rent a holiday cottage by the sea, needing time and space away from home after Maude became involved in some troubling events. Nell grew up in this small wind-blown town and has mixed feelings about returning, and it isn't long before she is recognised by a neighbour, seemingly desperate to befriend her. The cottage, too, has been empty for some time, and from the start, Nell feels uncomfortable there.
Something isn't quite right about this place....
Maude, furious about being brought here against her will and her father's attention falling so often elsewhere, soon finds herself beguiled by the house's strange atmosphere. There are peculiar marks in the roof beams above her bedroom, and in another room, a hiding place, concealing a strange, unnerving object.
As the house gradually reveals its secrets, Nell becomes increasingly uneasy - and Maude spellbound. But these women - and the women that surround them - are harbouring their own secrets, too, and soon events will come to a terrible head....
My Review
The story opens as Nell, her husband Chris and his daughter Maude arrive at the seaside holiday cottage they have rented in Nellās home town of Whitby.
She really didnāt want to come back but the party is an anniversary celebration for one of Nell's relatives and she feels she should attend.
Elder house is a looming cottage that has been standing for many years. The online pictures gave it a quaint look that just isnāt there in person and the yard out the back gives off an eerie, unsettling vibe.
I loved the description of the house, itās clear it has a sinister history, which becomes more apparent the further along you read.
Maude is the usual kind of stroppy girl on the edge of becoming a teen. She secretly knows about how her father and Nell became a couple and makes Nell's life as hard as she can. She refuses to sleep anywhere but in the loft, where she finds odd carvings in the beams, these fascinate her after discovering that they are in fact protection markings from long ago, carved to ward off evil.
It isnāt long before the house begins affecting them all, Maudeās loathing of her stepmother increases and Chris has left to sort out a work crisis leaving them both alone.
I didnāt like Chrisās character, I had the impression all along that he was cheating on Nell, he could have come back at any point of Nell's distressed requests but he always had an excuse.
Things intensify when a small childās shoe is found concealed behind a wall panel. The neighbour next door warns Nell to be careful as the house has a terrible history, but as supernatural happenings increase and other neighbours are also acting weird Nell, fears something dark is coming but she isnāt sure what. The strange shuffling noises around the house, doors banging on their own and items that keep mysteriously disappearing all become too much, but when they both start to slowly get ill Nell knows she needs to figure out once and for all what strange force is at work and what does it want?
Hugely unsettling, chilling and menacingly atmospheric, this novel is perfect for a spooky Halloween night š»
