My Review
Thank you so much Trapeze for this great copy and also to Compulsive Readers for this blog tour spot.
This was such a fantastic read, fast paced, gripping and highly addictive, I literally had my entire weekend taken up by this book as I could not put it down.
The book is set out over two different perspectives, Alice and Ben.
Alice has woken up to find her husband Alex's side of the bed empty so she goes down to find him, he is not downstairs so she realises he must be in his study at the end of the garden working on his latest play.
Once she has made the coffee and prepared his crumpets for breakfast, Alice heads down there to find the study empty, the place a complete mess and a note telling her to tell their son Max that he is sorry.
Ben is a Primary school teacher, he is up at 6 am every morning and out the door by 645 on his way to work.
This morning was not special to any other day, his routine played out like normal aside from the heavy rain beating down on his car and it isn't until he is on the motorway and a flash of white is in front of a car does ben realise he has hit someone, and its pretty bad.
Alice and Ben become entwined in each others lives from that point on, Alice is a strong, clever character. She gradually leans on Ben more and more, using him to relieve the day to day things that her husband would normally have done with their seven year old son, at the same time leading him on because she is confused as to what she actually wants, also turning to drink as she doesn't realise how much she is struggling to cope with it all on her own. Ben is a quiet character, coming across very sensitive and an all round nice guy, but as the book goes on you realise actually he has quite an obsessive needy nature and almost instantly is declaring his love for Alice.
I really enjoy reads where you can read the story from different points of view, in life it is exactly the same, what one person says or does can be taken completely a different way by another, and to read this throughout, Ben falling head over heels for Alice and assuming that every thing she does is in reciprocation to how he feels but in reality Alice has no feelings towards Ben and is just using him.
At first I quite disliked Alice and the way she would behave, but really quite liked Ben finding him more relatable, but as the story progresses and i find out more about Alice and her wealthy lifestyle the more I found I started to like her and even could understand why she behaves the way she does, on the flip to that I also started disliking Bens character as the story moved along. so I ended up having a complete flip around of my feelings towards the characters half way through the book!
The best part of this story for me was the twist at the end!! That one chapter that is different from all the rest, it completely floored me and was extremely creepy, clever and totally twisted.
I was immersed in these pages from start to finish and can not wait for Robin Morgan - Bentleys next book.
