Synopsis
Neva Friezland is born into a world of trickery and illusion, where fortunes can be won and lost on the turn of a card.
She is also born with an extraordinary gift. She can predict the weather.
In Regency England, where the proper goal for a gentlewoman is marriage and only God knows the weather, this is dangerous. It is also potentially very lucrative.
In order to debate with the men of science and move about freely, Neva adopts a sophisticated male disguise. She foretells the weather from inside an automaton created by her brilliant clockmaker father.
But what will happen when the disguised Neva falls in love with a charismatic young man?
It can be very dangerous to be ahead of your time. Especially as a woman.
My Review
This page-turning and compelling story is packed with feminism and a desperate need to be accepted for who you truly are.
- This book started really great for me. I loved the historical backdrop, I loved the prologue that really gripped me and excited me for the rest of the story and loved the premise for Nevaās gifts. I did enjoy it and I would recommend it.
The writer swaps between two narratives and slowly builds up a picture of the lives of both at a great pace. By detailing little Nevaās life before the accident at the beginning the writer causes sympathy for the little girl and how she is treated by her parents, and I was happy to discover she did not perish in the Inn, but in a serendipitous moment meets a gentleman who can offer her a better life, whilst seemingly improving his own lonely life at the same time.
The only niggle I had was the language used by little Neva. I found it a little difficult to relate with a three-year-old talking and using sentences like an adult would, but as much as I found this a struggle it didnāt ruin the story for me and it went on to be a book that I was sad to close the final page on.
The feminism theme was compelling and a message of being accepted as you are was threading throughout.
This story was full of lovable characters and the backdrop of Georgian London added to the atmospheric feel this story exuded.
