August 30, 1975...

The day of the disappearance.

The day Somerset, New Hampshire, lost it’s innocence.

That summer, struggling author Harry Quebert fell in love with a fifteen year old girl, Nola Kerrigan. Thirty three years later, her body is dug up from his yard, along with a handwritten manuscript copy of the novel that secured his lasting fame. Quebert is the only suspect..

But with Nola, in death as in life, NOTHING is ever as it seems...

My Review...

Wow!!! What.A.Book!!!

Marcus Goldman, a shallow, handsome, eager to please young man whose first novel made him rich and famous, but work on the second book has gone nowhere, and with a deadline and a possible lawsuit looming, the struggling writer travels to the town of Somerset, in rural New Hampshire, to reconnect with Harry Quebert, his college writing professor, friend and mentor.

Soon afterwards, the body of Nola Kellergan, a young girl who disappeared 33 years earlier is discovered on Quebert's property.

Nola was a 15-year-old girl whose abductor, despite some strong leads, was never found. Buried with her is a manuscript of Quebert's celebrated book, a love story called The Origin of Evil that was inspired (as everyone is now discovering) by a secret affair with Nola.

It's not looking good for Quebert. Everyone in the small town who once thought him a great, famous author, are now turning there back on him, branding him a pervert killer before he is even officially arrested and convicted.

But Marcus, loyal to his teacher, sets out to clear his name – and soon his publisher is offering a multimillion dollar advance for a book about the murky doings surrounding Nola's death. Marcus then swears to get to the bottom of actually what happened between Harry and Nola, investigating every small lead either overlooked or for the first time, but in the mean time also writing up everything that he is experiencing for his next book.

I read this book in days despite its size. I was completely hooked..

I started with the tv show and stopped watching so I could find out what happens in the book instead of watching on tv! This book is a magnificent Russian doll of whodunnits!!

So expertly written that you just can not put it down for long!

At first there is a feeling of distaste for Harry as he is an older man and Nola is practically a venerable child, but as the story unfolds you come to realise that he did everything he could to avoid falling for Nola.

Marcus is a great character, the way he investigates all that is around him and the way the story has so many twists and turns keeps you page turning with a huge passion..

Just when I thought I had worked it out, it threw me another curve ball, there was so many suspects and unexpected revelations, twists and turns that I did not see the end coming at all..

To say i was shocked with the final twist at the end is a huge understatement and i eagerly went out and brought the second book by this author The Baltimore Boys.

HIGHLY recommend this book to everyone.
