A Net For Small Fishes by Lucy Jago

Read my review Here

ā—¦ Release Date: February 4th

ā—¦ Genre: Historical Fiction

ā—¦ Publisher: Bloomsbury

ā—¦ PreOrder Here

Available in hardback - Ā£13.19

Frances Howard has beauty and a powerful family - and is the most unhappy creature in the world.

Anne Turner has wit and talent - but no stage on which to display them. Little stands between her and the abyss of destitution.

When these two very different women meet in the strangest of circumstances, a powerful friendship is sparked. Frankie sweeps Anne into a world of splendour that exceeds all she imagined: a Court whose foreign king is a stranger to his own subjects; where ancient families fight for power, and where the sovereign's favourite may rise and rise - so long as he remains in favour.

With the marriage of their talents, Anne and Frankie enter this extravagant, savage hunting ground, seeking a little happiness for themselves. But as they gain notice, they also gain enemies; what began as a search for love and safety leads to desperate acts that could cost them everything.

[big & bold:] Based on the true scandal that rocked the court of James I, A Net for Small Fishes is the most gripping novel you'll read this year: an exhilarating dive into the pitch-dark waters of the Jacobean court.

Daughters Of Night by Laura Shepard Robinson

From the pleasure palaces and gin-shops of Covent Garden to the elegant townhouses of Mayfair, Laura Shepherd-Robinsonā€™s Daughters of Night follows Caroline Corsham as she seeks justice for a murdered woman whom London society would rather forget . . .

Luciaā€™s fingers found her own. She gazed at Caro as if from a distance. Her lips parted, her words a whisper: ā€˜He knows.ā€™

London, 1782. Desperate for her politician husband to return home from France, Caroline ā€˜Caroā€™ Corsham is already in a state of anxiety when she finds a well-dressed woman mortally wounded in the bowers of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. The Bow Street constables are swift to act, until they discover that the deceased woman was a highly paid prostitute, at which point they cease to care entirely. But Caro has motives of her own for wanting to see justice done, and so sets out to solve the crime herself. Enlisting the help of thieftaker Peregrine Child, their inquiry delves into the hidden corners of Georgian society, a world of artifice, deception and secret lives.

But with many gentlemen refusing to speak about their dealings with the dead woman, and Caroā€™s own reputation under threat, finding the killer will be harder, and more treacherous, than she can know . . .

Nick by Michael Farris Smith

ā—¦ Release Date: February 25th

ā—¦ Genre: Historical Fiction

ā—¦ Publisher: No Exit Press

ā—¦ Preorder Here

Available in hardback - Ā£10.55

Critically acclaimed novelist Michael Farris Smith pulls Nick Carraway out of the shadows and into the spotlight in this exhilarating imagination of his life before The Great Gatsby

Before Nick Carraway moved to West Egg and into Gatsby's world, he was at the centre of a very different story - one taking place along the trenches and deep within the tunnels of World War I.

Floundering in the wake of the destruction he witnessed first-hand, Nick delays his return home, hoping to escape the questions he cannot answer about the horrors of war. Instead, he embarks on a transcontinental redemptive journey that takes him from a whirlwind Paris romance - doomed from the very beginning - to the dizzying frenzy of New Orleans, rife with its own flavour of debauchery and violence.

An epic portrait of a truly singular era and a sweeping, romantic story of self-discovery, this rich and imaginative novel breathes new life into a character that many know only from the periphery. Charged with enough alcohol, heartbreak, and profound yearning to transfix even the heartiest of golden age scribes, NICK reveals the man behind the narrator who has captivated readers for decades.

West With Giraffes: a novel by Lynda Rutledge

ā—¦ Release Date: February 1st

ā—¦ Genre: Literary/Historical Fiction

ā—¦ Publisher: Lake Union Publishing

ā—¦ Purchase Here

Available in paperback/hardback - Ā£3.99

ā€œFew true friends have I known and two were giraffesā€¦ā€

Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave.

Itā€™s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to deliver Southern Californiaā€™s first giraffes to the San Diego Zoo. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow. Inspired by true events, the tale weaves real-life figures with fictional ones, including the worldā€™s first female zoo director, a crusty old man with a past, a young female photographer with a secret, and assorted reprobates as spotty as the giraffes.

Part adventure, part historical saga, and part coming-of-age love story, West with Giraffes explores what it means to be changed by the grace of animals, the kindness of strangers, the passing of time, and a story told before itā€™s too late.

The fifth novel in Julia Quinn's globally beloved and bestselling Bridgerton Family series, set in Regency times and now a series created by Shonda Rhimes for Netflix.

This is Eloise's story . . .

My dear Miss Bridgerton,

We have been corresponding now for quite some time, and although we have never formally met, I feel as if I know you.

Forgive me if I am too bold, but I am writing to invite you to visit me here at Romney Hall. It is my hope that after a suitable period of time, we might decide that we will suit, and you will consent to be my wife.

Did he think she was mad?

Eloise Bridgerton couldn't marry a man she had never met! But then she started thinking . . . and wondering . . . and before she knew it, she was in a hired carriage in the middle of the night, on her way to meet the man she hoped might be her perfect match.

Except . . . he wasn't. Her perfect husband wouldn't be so moody and ill-mannered, and while Phillip was certainly handsome, he was a large brute of a man, rough and rugged, and totally unlike the London gentlemen vying for her hand. But when he smiled . . . and when he kissed her . . .

the rest of the world simply fell away.

She couldn't help but wonder . . . could this imperfect man be perfect for her?

Welcome to Francesca's story . . .

In every life there is a turning point. A moment so tremendous, so sharp and breath-taking, that one knows one's life will never be the same. For Michael Stirling, London's most infamous bachelor, that moment came the first time he laid eyes on Francesca Bridgerton.

After a lifetime of chasing women, of smiling slyly as they chased him, of allowing himself to be caught but never permitting his heart to become engaged, he took one look at Francesca Bridgerton and fell so fast and hard into love it was a wonder he managed to remain standing.

Unfortunately for Michael, however, Francesca's surname was to remain Bridgerton for only a mere thirty-six hours longer - the occasion of their meeting was, lamentably, a supper celebrating her imminent wedding to his cousin . . .

Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson

ā—¦ Release Date: February 4th

ā—¦ Genre: Fiction

ā—¦ Publisher: Viking

ā—¦ Pre Order Here

Available in hardback - Ā£9.69

In a crowded London pub, two young people meet. Both are Black British, both won scholarships to private schools where they struggled to belong, both are now artists--he a photographer, she a dancer--and both are trying to make their mark in a world that by turns celebrates and rejects them. Tentatively, tenderly, they fall in love. But two people who seem destined to be together can still be torn apart by fear and violence, and over the course of a year they find their relationship tested by forces beyond their control.

Narrated with deep intimacy, Open Water is at once an achingly beautiful love story and a potent insight into race and masculinity that asks what it means to be a person in a world that sees you only as a Black body; to be vulnerable when you are only respected for strength; to find safety in love, only to lose it. With gorgeous, soulful intensity, and blistering emotional intelligence, Caleb Azumah Nelson gives a profoundly sensitive portrait of romantic love in all its feverish waves and comforting beauty.

This is one of the most essential debut novels of recent years, heralding the arrival of a stellar and prodigious young talent.

You've Got Mail by Kate G Smith

Synopsis -

When Grace Wharton is dumped by email from a relationship she isn't even in, she adds it to the list of ways her life hasn't quite panned out: twenty-five, single, and working a dead-end job she doesn't enjoy. She fires off an angry response to Mr Obnoxious - how dare he try to dump someone over email?! - knowing that telling off a random stranger online means she has reached an all-time low.

Everything changes when her boss asks her to go to a big sales conference to secure an important client. Her partner is Jack Lockett, company Casanova and Grace's long-time crush. What's more, he seems very interested... But Mr Obnoxious keeps sending her emails and Grace keeps replying. Only to make sure he doesn't send any more heart-breaking emails, obviously.

Grace's life has suddenly gone from stagnant to brimming with possibilities. But is it all too good to be true?

- BLOGGER OF THE MONTH -

So if you have made it this far you have now come to the tricky part of my newsletter! I will be selecting one blogger a month to feature and that will be no easy feat as there are so many of you and you are all amazing!!

But having said that, this month was easy. For my first Blogger Of The Month pick I have chosen my lovely bookish buddy Emma @Emmasbibliotreasures.

I met Emma at the beginning of last year, not long after I started my book blogging journey and I am so proud to say we have became firm friends ever since. We have supported each other and used each other as a sounding board for everything, especially giving each other the much needed words of encouragement when ever we are doubting ourselves.

Her bookish photos are absolutely beautiful and reviews are on point every time.

Here's a bit about Emma and why she started her blogging journey...

Hi Bibliophiles šŸ‘‹šŸ»

My name is Emma. I'm 41 years old and live in Sheffield, UK with my partner, Chris, our two teenage sons and two cats.

I started blogging in August 2018 after encouragement from friends whoā€™d seen me talking about the books Iā€™d read on my private social media. I had never heard of Bookstagram and didnā€™t know that there was a whole community of book bloggers out there. I didnā€™t know I was about to find a place that felt like home and meet friends I know Iā€™ll have for a lifetime. I didn't know I was about to find my passion.

Iā€™ve always been a bibliophile. As a child I was a voracious reader and turned my book collection into a library that I would loan out to my stuffed animals. As I grew, books were the backdrop to my life, helping shape who I am and enabling me to explore worlds Iā€™d otherwise never see. After a number of years where I hardly read because of pain and brain fog due to chronic illness, my obsession for books was reignited when I received a kindle for Christmas in 2017. Actually, I received two. The second one my Mum bought from me for herself after sheā€™d had the same idea as my partner. While I still struggle with pain and brain fog, I am once again a voracious reader and, even with my reading slowed and both my concentration and retention impaired, I have managed to read prolifically since 2018.

I love pretty much all genres, but my favourites are historical fiction and thrillers. I have a never-ending list of must-read authors including Tess Gerritsen, John Grisham, Karin Slaughter, John Marrs, Mark Edwards, Laura Purcell, Jessie Burton, Stacey Halls and Carol Wyer. But if I had to pick my favourite it would be Jodi Picoult.

Some of my favourite books of all time are Small Great Things, Flowers in the Attic, We Need To Talk About Kevin, A Time To Kill, The One and The Handmaids Tale. In recent years favourites include The Familiars, What's Left Of Me Is Yours, The Silent Companions, Hamnet, Away with the Penguins, Sweetpea and Here To Stay.

The aim of this blog is to share my passion for books and connect with other book lovers. Please feel free to follow me on my Instagram or Twitter and come chat.

Emma's 'If I had to choose one' book recommendation is

Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult

YOUR SELF CARE SHELF

We all know how life is at the moment. Lockdown and the virus has made sure we are all being tested to the max and trying to keep yourself calm, sane and happy in these uncertain times can be extremely tough on your mental health.

I personally have also struggled. I was signed off of work for five weeks with stress which was making my previously healing Bells Palsy {also caused by stress}, rear its ugly head again, so I knew I had to stop what I was doing and take some time for myself because crying in your car whilst you have a fifteen minute break before even lunch time at work wasn't right, for my mental well being or for my face.

Reading has been a huge help.

When the Bells Palsy first started and my entire left side of my face was paralysed I went from reading a lot to reading a little as I would get headaches as I couldn't focus. As I slowly begun the process of healing via regular acupuncture sessions and facials I would constantly try and lose myself within a book to try and get myself out of my head and my depleting mental health. I won't lie, It was the worst time in my life and I'll be totally transparent I am still seeing a therapist to help me deal with what happened and with trying to accept who I am now I am left with reminders that unfortunately won't ever fully heal. My point is that sitting in that car on my break, crying on the phone to my husband as I just couldnt be happy was like a blinding light to give myself the much needed self help to get my head together.

I know that we are all struggling with home schooling, working under strained and different situations and living in fear of getting sick so I have included a few books that may help you find the calm you need to get some peace and tranquility in your life.

I really hope they help.

'I recommend this for anyone who's looking to find true consistent happiness' Craig David

The stuff that's going to really hit up that happiness on a deep and nourishing level. Whether you dip into these pages every now and then when you feel you need it, or use it daily as a positive exercise, I hope it brings you much relief, joy and calm. Amen to the pen." - Fearne Cotton

For many of us, life can feel like it's moving too fast with pressure bearing down on us from all sides - whether that's from school or work, family or social media. As a result, we find ourselves frazzled, lost and - too often - feeling blue.

It's a subject close to Fearne's heart. Drawing on her own experiences and including expert advice, HAPPY offers practical ways of finding joy each and every day. Happiness isn't a mountain to climb, it's just one foot in front of the other on the path of life, and here you'll find little steps that will help make the differences that count. With workbook elements to help you start and end the day well; get in touch with your creative side; and find peace through written exercises, simple practical ideas and visualisations, these are daily tricks and reminders to help you unlock that inner happiness.
