Synopsis

When Diya Burmanā€™s best friend dies, her life falls apart. She loses everything.

But then she gets a new job: working at Slough & Sons, cleaning up after the recently deceased.

Clearing away the remains of lost lives, Diya begins to see things. Horrible things, that canā€™t be written off as imagination. Nothing is as it seems with the Sloughs.

Itā€™s a dirty business, cleaning up after the dead, and if Diyaā€™s not careful she might end up getting buried under the family tree.

My Review

- In keeping with the spooky season I managed to squeeze in this creepy and unsettling horror by Jonathan Sims.

Family Business is my first book by this author, I have heard of his previous works and I know they have rave reviews so I thought I would take a chance on a new voice this haunting season.

I'm not really a fan of overly gory details, I have even had to DNF when they went extreme, which was a worry of mine with this one but surprisingly I was happy to discover I enjoyed every bit of this unsettling read. The characters are likeable, Diya being the main one. She innocently takes a job clearing up after the recently departed, clearing away personal belongings like love letters, jewellery and very personal effects. It's when she starts to see a mysterious man that keeps appearing and strange things that keep happening that the story really ups itself a notch.

The premise for this story I found totally fascinating, I am a believer in the afterlife and that we do not always just simply leave this earth happily and without issues. The author really draws you in and hooks you with supernatural unease, making you question everything you possibly thought before.

A great unsettling and chilling read that for me played on my mind more than scared me, which was ok.

Thank you @Gollancz for this review copy and for adding to my spooky season.
